In any case, the other reason I wasn’t going to write this is that I don’t have a fast or simple solution for this, which is what people want I don’t have a checklist that you can just go down to clean the house of fascism (look, Eco got a full essay and there’s been work done since it doesn’t count).
As perhaps usual I think the symbol misuse is a symptom of the issues but not the actual issue itself if you don’t want to end up related to the hell that is Q you need to make it far less appealing and easy to combine this guy may be an odd bedfellow with the aforementioned evangelicals but he’s not an unthinkable one. Which is also not to discount the fact that violent, often misogynistic (not ruling it out but couldn’t tell based on this guy’s stuff) cult of heroism stuff, antisemitism, nationalism and other Q interests obviously fit in really well with the long-standing issues Norse religion, academia, and other related arenas have had. (This is actually a book review, but if you want a fairly concise yet informative intro to the conversation around this word and things Norse, this article by Miriam Mayburd is pretty good). And you probably just thought runes, and you’re not wrong, but if you get real curious Google the term “norse shamanism” and see how many takes you get that are either wildly misleading and/or lead you to something like the above paragraph. I hope there’s nothing in the modern Norse religious revival that might trickle out and lend itself exceedingly well to something like this.
